| Wifi or Wireless networking is a new standard for networks. The old ethernet networking was based on cables. They were usually copper wire and to install a network required cable, cablers, racks of connectors, and a pile of money. Now we have wireless ethernet or WiFi. No cabling, or wires. (Well you still need power cables). The simplest installation of a wireless network is a wireless access point and a wireless network adapter in your PC. The PC can be 20-30 meters away depending on the strength of signal from the access point. For special installations longer ranges can be used and greater distances supported. For the average home or small business one access point will cover it. For larger areas or difficult environments a range extender can be used or an extra access point used. The flexibility afforded by your wireless network is equalled by the security of the new networking. You can encrypt all communications and ensure no unauthorised device attached to your network. There are several standards in wireless networking. The standard supported currently is 802.11G a magic number meaning that equipment connected will transfer data at a maximum speed of 54Mb/s.
